Futurate was commissioned to undertake a formal usability study of one of the Natural History Museum's large-scale websites.
'Nature Navigator' is a complex archival site that gives access to a huge library of digital images from the museum's extensive collection of paintings and drawings.
Our review of the website looked at usability, accessibility and the internal management of the project. We used a range of techniques to consult with potential users; including a day spent at the museum, observing visitors as they used the website.
We combined this data with the results of an online survey, our analysis and interviews with museum staff.
Although the site was intended to demonstrate best practice in accessible web-interface design, it was not compliant with the necessary standards.
Part of our role was to evaluate the site from this perspective and make appropriate recommendations.
We prepared a practical and focused report that recommended various changes that would significantly enhance the experience for all site users.
Based on this report, the website was adapted.
"Futurate offered a structured plain English approach to the project."
