SYPTE

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) is one of Europe’s largest transport organisations. Its mission is to create the right conditions for commercial bus, train and tram operators to provide good public transport in the South Yorkshire region.

In 2005, we were commissioned to redeploy SYPTE’s existing website using Microsoft’s Content Management Server.

However, the final outcome of the project was much more ambitious, with the eventual solution consisting of not one web site, but two.

We partnered with SYPTE to:

  • deploy and extend Microsoft’s CMS and implement new content and services;
  • consult with transport users to establish what they needed from the new sites;
  • integrate APR Smartlogik’s Semaphore tool to enhance the quality of search results;
  • integrate Futurate’s ‘Participate’ web tool, giving non-technical staff the ability to easily create web-based forms for surveys and event bookings;
  • provide training and end user documentation;
  • facilitate the operational changes needed to successfully implement an organisation-wide CMS.

Results

The initial consultation process revealed that there was an opportunity to do much more than redeploy the existing site.

The result was two, new, high-impact websites: one delivering information to public transport users, the other providing resources related to SYPTE’s strategic activities and governance.

The resulting sites are attractive, usable and accessible; and offer transport users various information services that were not previously available (such as searchable timetables that can be downloaded in PDF format).

As a result of our successful collaboration with SYPTE, we were contracted to redesign the user interface for yorkshiretravel.net, improving the user experience and ensuring accessibility and compatibility with street information points.

"Our new content managed websites have a potential audience of around 1.5 million people and it was essential that the company we selected to deliver them could handle the challenge of delivering up-to-the minute and integrated public transport information, to a large and very diverse audience."
